Application Procedures

How to Select a Course

2-year General Course: For those with a student visa who will be enrolled for 6 months to 2 years. Please see the 2-year general course information stated below.

Short-term Course: For those who are already in Japan with eligibility (or pending one) on the basis of the Working Visa, the status of Dependent, Spouse or Child of Japanese National, Temporary Visitor, etc. please see the Short-term Course information below. You may enroll within the period permitted for stay in Japan.

Note: For those who come from the Countries and Regions that have visa exemption arrangements with Japan may come to Japan without visa (A temporary visa will be issued at the airport when you arrive in Japan.) and sign up for the Short-term Course while your visa is valid.

Required Documents (Short-term Course)

The following application documents may be conveniently downloaded in Adobe Acrobat® format for printing out by clicking on them. If you do not have or wish to install Acrobat Reader® on your computer, you can receive it by contacting the JLI office by email, telephone, fax, or in person.

  4. 1 photograph (4cm x 3cm) Please attach it to application Form A.
  5. A copy of your passport or Alien Registration Card (both side) for the purpose of verifying your personal information, including name and birthday, as well as the eligibility and duration of your stay.

Selection and Placement Test

An applicant who has previously studied Japanese must take a placement test in order to confirm the level of placement. His/ her class will be determined by the result of the placement test and interview. An applicant who has never studied Japanese does not need to take this test.

Fees

Admission fee: ¥20,000

Tuition fee/ Term: ¥190,000

Materials fee: ¥4,500 - ¥10,000

(The materials fee depends on the level) Please remit your admission fee and tuition fee by the payment deadline stated above. Please contact us in advance if you cannot remit them on time. You will receive your materials and a materials bill in the classroom on the first day. Please remit your materials fee after you receive it.

    You can pay on site at the JLI window, or deposit it in or transfer it to our bank account.

    Payment must be made in cash in Japanese yen. We do not accept foreign currencies, credit cards, electric money, traveler’s checks, etc.

    ※Closed on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, as well as Year - end and New Year
  3. Bank deposit/ money transfer
    We will notify the applicant or the financial sponsor of our bank account for deposit or transfer purposes at a later date.
    ※Please deposit/transfer in Japanese yen.
    ※The applicant is to burden the cost for deposit/transfer. Please note that, in case of a money transfer from abroad, the receiving Japanese bank may also charge a fee, in addition to the local bank of origin.

  5. A copy of the diploma of your most recent degree
    • If the certificate is not written in English, please attach an English or Japanese translation.
    • If you are a student of an undergraduate program, please submit an official transcript of your academic record from your college or university plus a certificate of graduation from the last high school attended (must be an official copy).
    • If you cannot obtain a certificate of graduation, please send your original diploma; it will be returned to you as soon as possible. All applicants who have passports from the People's Republic of China are required to attach a notary certificate along with their original certificate of graduation.
    • Graduates from a higher school in the People’s Republic of China require additional documents. Please contact the JLI office if this applies to you.
  6. TRANSCRIPT of the last degree earned
    As a matter of principle, a copy will not be accepted.
  7. OFFICIAL STATEMENT CERTIFYING THE APPLICANT'S OCCUPATION
    This applies only to applicants who have full-time work experience.
  8. Picture (4cm x 3cm) ×3
    Submit 3 pictures of yourself taken clearly without a hat or background scenery, facing front. Attach one of them to Form A.
  9. A copy of your passport
    Submit the page that lists your information (name, birthday, etc.) and, if you have entered and/or exited Japan in the past, all the pages that record your history of entries and exits.
    Note: If the entry/exit record is on your old passport, submit, in addition, the page in the old passport that lists your personal information and all the pages that record your history of entries and exits.
  10. DOCUMENTS which prove an APPLICANT’s background
  11. COPY OF OFFICIAL CERTIFICATE OF JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST HIGHER THAN LEVEL 4 or OFFICIAL CERTIFICATE OF J. TEST.
    (If you have not taken these tests, you must certify that you have some background in studying Japanese attested to by a certificate from a certified Japanese language school.)

DOCUMENTATION TO BE SUPPLIED BY THE FINANCIAL SPONSOR

The documents required differ depending upon whether applicants are self-supporting, will be supported by their parents, or will be supported by other persons.

    For applicants planning to study in Japan for one year, a balance of about US$30,000 (US$1= ¥100) is generally required.
  3. CERTIFICATE OF ANNUAL INCOME TAX FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS

CASE 2: APPLICANT IS SUPPORTED BY PARENTS, BROTHER, OR SISTER

  1. WRITTEN OATH (Form E)
    This form must be completed by the person responsible for payment of the applicant's fees and living expenses.

  2. LETTER OF EXPLANATION OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT(Form F)
    This form must be completed by the person responsible for payment of the applicant's fees and living expenses.

  3. OFFICIAL BANK STATEMENT in English or Japanese, certifying the sponsor's exact balance of funds (copies are unacceptable)
    For those planning to study in Japan for one year, a balance of about US$30,000 (US$1= ¥100) or more is generally required.
  4. OFFICIAL STATEMENT CERTIFYING THE OCCUPATION OF THE SPONSOR (unofficial copies unacceptable)
    • Can be in English or Japanese
    • Must be issued by the sponsor's employer
    • If the sponsor is self-employed, please send an official copy of the company's corporate registration. This registration must clearly list the sponsor's name as a director or owner.
  5. CERTIFICATE OF ANNUAL INCOME TAX FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS
  6. COPY OF AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT CERTIFYING THE APPLICANT'S RELATIONSHIP TO THE SPONSOR
    • Applicants sponsored by their parents should send a copy of their birth certificate.
    • Applicants sponsored by a sibling should send a copy of an official statement certifying the family relationship.
    • The Family Register is acceptable only for applicants with passports from the Republic of China (Taiwan) or the Republic of Korea.

CASE 3:
APPLICANT TO BE SUPPORTED BY A JAPANESE CITIZEN OR PERSON WITH A RESIDENCY VISA

The following information is also available in Japanese.

  1. WRITTEN OATH (Form E)
    This form must be completed by the Japanese person responsible for payment of fees and living expenses, and must have that person's registered seal affixed.

  2. LETTER OF EXPLANATION OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT(Form F)
    This form must be completed by the Japanese person responsible for payment of fees and living expenses, and must have that person's registered seal affixed.

  3. OFFICIAL COPY OF BANK STATEMENT CERTIFYING SPONSOR'S EXACT BANK BALANCE (unofficial copies are unacceptable)
    • Can be in English or Japanese

    • Copy of withholding tax statement from the sponsor's company is unacceptable.
    • Must be issued by the Japanese official tax office (available at city hall).
  6. OFFICIAL CERTIFICATE OF SPONSOR'S SEAL (Copies are unacceptable)
    Can be in English or Japanese
  7. CERTIFICATE OF RESIDENCE/CITIZENSHIP (Copies are unacceptable)
    • Each Written Oath (Form E) signer must furnish a certificate
    • Non-citizens must furnish an original certificate, issued by the ward office, stating that a Certificate of Alien Registration (Touroku Zumi Shoumeisho in Japanese) has been issued.

Selection of Applicants

The number of applications the JLI receives exceeds the number of available slots. Final selection of applications for admission is made on the basis of the quality of the documents submitted. Applicants' degree of motivation, necessity of learning Japanese, and soundness of financial planning for study in Japan are given primary consideration in the selection process.

Application Procedures

The Japanese Immigration Control Act requires that persons entering Japan for the purpose of studying at a Japanese language school have a "Pre-College Student" visa. The procedure for obtaining this visa is as follows:

  1. Make sure to mail us the application materials stated above during the application period. When doing so, remit the specified selection procession fee. (¥20,000)
  2. Upon careful consideration and selection, we will notify the applicant the results either by e-mail or phone by the notification date.
  3. For those who have won admittance to our program, JLI will submit, on their behalf, an application for the Certificate of Eligibility to the Tokyo Immigration Bureau.
  4. Upon receiving the application, the Tokyo Immigration Bureau will deliberate the applicant's eligibility.
  5. Upon receiving the results of the deliberation from the Tokyo Immigration Bureau, we will notify the applicant.
  6. If you have successfully obtained the Certificate of Eligibility, you will be required to remit the tuition for the first two terms by the specified deadline that is to be announced later.
  7. After confirming remittance, JLI will provide you the Certificate of Eligibility and an official Letter of Admission.
  8. Submit the Certificate of Eligibility, the Letter of Admission and your passport to the Japanese embassy or Consulate, and apply for a visa (which typically takes a several days).

Final Registration

Students admitted to the JLI should come to Japan and complete final registration procedures at the JLI office by the date indicated in the notice of admission. If students admitted to the JLI neither complete final registration procedures nor notify us of extenuating circumstances by that date, we are forced to cancel their admissions and report that this has been done to the Japanese Immigration Authorities.

※The total tuition for the 2-year General Course is 1,520,000 yen. You pay for the first 2 terms in a lump sum upon admission; from the 3rd quarter on, you will pay for each quarter.
