Kevin:

Hello, this is Nichibei Kaiwa Gakuin Podcasting. My Name is Kevin Jones. Each Episode instructors will answer questions about English words and phrases. This week I spoke with Emi.

Kevin:

Hi Emi, how ya doin'.

Emi:

Hi, good, thanks how are you.

Kevin:

Pretty good. What have you got?

Emi:

I'm reading a novel in English right now and there's a few words I'm not sure about.

Kevin:

OK, that should be no problem. What kind of words've you got?

Emi:

Well I know that all of these words have to do with personality traits. but I'd like to hear some teachers opinions about what they mean and how to use them.

Kevin:

No problem. What's the first word?

Emi:

OK, the first one is here, see this sentence? "Your children are too boisterous". What's boisterous?

Kevin:

OK, well let's ask Tony Demko.

Kevin:

Hey Tony do you have a moment?

Tony:

Sure Kevin, what's up?

Kevin:

Ah, what's your definition of boisterous?

Tony:

Well, boisterous means sombody who's loud, in high spirits.

Kevin:

Where do we see the word boisterous?

Tony:

Well you'll see it in more formal English, in more formal speaking or in writing but usually it's not used very commonly in casual conversation.

Kevin:

Thanks a lot. OK, how's that Emi?

Emi:

OK I think I've got it. The next one here is "She was very blunt with her criticism". What does blunt mean?

Kevin:

OK, let's go to Charles Tully for this one. Charlie do you have a minute?

Charlie:

Yeah, Hi Kevin, how you doing, what do you need?

Kevin:

Charles, what's your understanding of the word blunt?

Charlie:

Blunt is somebody who talks to other people without thinking about the other peoples feelings. they talk really roughly, they say things directly, they don't say things carefully. And, a blunt person is usually difficult to deal with because it's hard to be friendly with someone who is always blunt. They are always telling you things without worrying about how it affects you.

Kevin:

Ah, are you a blunt person?

Charlie:

Some people have said so, yes

Kevin:

Hey Charlie, thanks a lot.

Charlie:

OK, see you later.

Emi:

Yeah, that's what I thought. OK, there's one more, it's impulsive.

Kevin:

OK, for that one we're going to ask Ray Parnell. Ray, do you have a moment.

Ray:

Sure

Kevin:

The word I'm looking at here is impulsive. What does that mean?

Ray:

To me impulsive means a person who does something often without careful thought or careful planning. It can be positive or negative but it usually implies without too much forethought without too much planning. For example you say "he always shops impulsively." He doesn't think about things with a plan, he just buys whatever he feels like.

Kevin:

thanks a lot Ray.

Ray:

No problem.

Kevin:

Boisterous, blunt, impulsive.
