The United States continues to play a central role in world affairs, shaping or influencing the political events, economic policies and cultural movements of the nations of the globe. How did it become the superpower that it is today? What are its principal political institutions and processes? What is the historical background? What political issues and challenges is America facing today, and how are they tackled? What are the prominent political trends? What direction is US politics taking?

This 4-part lecture series on the introduction to American politics stretches over four semesters, using American Politics and Society (David McKay) as the main textbook. American Politics and Society, revised for the 7th edition in 2009, presents a comprehensive and balanced introduction to the structure and workings of the US government, its historical roots, and some of the major issues confronting it today.

Each of the four parts can be taken independently.

• The five sessions of Part 1 (the April semester) will cover core US political values, the American Constitution, federalism, political parties, and elections.
• The five sessions of Part 2 (the July semester) will cover the role and influence of the media in US politics, Congress and the presidency.
• The five sessions of Part 3 (the October semester) will cover the role and influence of bureaucracy, security policy, organized interests, judiciary and the regulation of public morality (such as civil rights).
• The five sessions of Part 4 (the January semester) will survey the US public policy in such areas as social welfare, economy, environmental protection and foreign affairs.

The course will run on a typical American college model: reading assignments and lively discussion in class. Voluntary class presentations will be welcomed. There are many Writing courses available to students these days, including business writing, application writing, academic writing, and so on. However, Japanese students often achieve the greatest improvement in English writing skills when they focus on writing about their own experience. When this Instructor tells students to keep personal diaries, they are usually reluctant to do so, but then gradually become accustomed to writing regularly in English. Within a month they are writing a couple of paragraphs each day and after another month 2-3 pages per week, although they have never been told to write more. They do it naturally, and the process of seeing people with even limited writing skills gradually develop a desire to write in another language about things that matter to them — relationships, work, illness, marriage, parenthood, etc. — is a moving experience.

This course will go beyond simple diary-writing, and focus on composing personal journals, a longer and more serious exercise than the diary. Throughout history, many great writers’ best works have grown from their private journals, and many such journals became the basis for literature, science, and other endeavors. Our journals will discuss each student’s personal response to topics discussed in class. The topics will cover a wide range of themes, including science, philosophy and spirituality, but always with a focus on the personal growth of the individual.

The same Instructor teaches a course in Positive Psychology, and some of the themes examined in this course will echo the themes of that course. Although one of the topics we cover will be the results of recent scientific research (e.g., on human perception, decision making, interpersonal attraction, etc.), our focus is not on the science but on what it tells us about the nature of self-awareness. We will discuss many ideas unrelated to science, and consider views of philosophers and spiritual thinkers from various cultures and historical periods.

The Goals of this course are 1) to improve English writing; 2) to increase self-awareness; and 3) to experience a sense of change and growth in our individual lives.

Homework will involve both reading — short sections from various books and other sources — and daily writing. One of the keys to personal growth is increased self-awareness, and we will explore this by writing about our own personal experience. Students will all be required to keep a journal to record their thoughts, feelings and ideas day to day. The Instructor will review and correct these writing assignments to help students strengthen their ability to express complex ideas in clear, economical English prose.

Classwork will involve lectures, as well as discussion of both our readings and students’ personal journals. There will be “pair work” involving students talking to each other in English, and from time to time all students will speak to the class.

This is an advanced writing skills course. In this course you will learn paragraph and sentence structure; logical writing structure; paraphrasing; and summarizing/synthesizing various source materials into a cohesive written whole. In particular, the course will cover writing styles and formats necessary for persons working for organizations with an international dimension: formal/campaign letters, fact sheets, press releases, report writing including field reports and meeting minutes, grant/budget proposals, email and written formats for international organizations. It is specifically aimed for persons who wish to work in non-governmental organizations, international or multinational organizations, organizations with an international purpose or orientation, as well as persons who wish to attend graduate school in international relations, developments studies, law, politics, economics or sociology. Other persons interested in these issues or improving writing skills are welcome to attend.

This course is designed for those persons who have upper-intermediate, advanced level of English ability and who wish to improve their writing skills for producing professional English language documents and materials.

It is a multi-skill writing course utilizing diverse global issues for content. After a review of materials concerning a particular issue, the class will focus on different methods, styles and formats to write about these issues. There will be weekly reading and writing assignments as well as class discussion. The topics selected for this course reflect issues of current international interest. Prior knowledge of these issues is not necessary to join the class as the focus is improving writing skills.

This course provides an ethnographic survey of Middle Eastern peoples and cultures and is designed to help participants gain a better understanding of the major conflicts in this complex region. Although familiarity with the Middle East is a bonus, no previous knowledge of the area is required. After a general introduction to the geography and cultures of the Middle East, this course examines the effects of the colonial period upon the social-cultural development of the region; the rise of political Islam, including social movements and revolutions in several Middle Eastern countries; US policy in the Middle East, focusing on Iraq, Afghanistan and the Arab Spring; the Arab-Israeli conflict; and the future of the Middle East.

This course encourages learning through lively classroom discussions. Reading and media materials will include a variety of sources including news articles, online video clips, book chapters, and documentaries. Reading and media materials will not be lengthy and participants are strongly expected to complete the assignments before the start of each class. This course will be an excellent opportunity for participants to expand their understanding of the Middle East while also sharpening their English and discussion skills.

There is a rich tradition of philosophical thoughts and thinking in the West, dating back to the ancient times. Philosophy has always been a part of world history, shaping and being shaped by the prevailing political events, economic forces and cultural trends in each age. It continues to be a potent and pertinent factor in the contemporary world.

This 4-part lecture series on the introduction to Western philosophy stretches over four semesters, using Sophie’s World (Jostein Gaarder) as the main textbook. Sophie’s World, translated into clear and readable English, presents an easy-to- follow introductory survey of the history of Western philosophy. Each part can be taken independently.

• The five sessions of Part 1 will cover the ancient world of mythology, Greek natural philosophers, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.
• The five sessions of Part 2 will cover the ancient Roman school of Hellenism, the Jewish tradition, the emergence and development of Christianity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the beginning of the modern era (Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz).
• The five sessions of Part 3 will cover British empiricism, the Enlightenment, including Kant and Hegel, Kierkegaard and Marx, among other things.
• The five sessions of Part 4 will cover Freud, Nietzsche, Sartre, Derrida, Wittgenstein, and other modern philosophers.

We will review these thinkers and their ideas critically. In the process, there will be ample opportunity to get trained in deductive reasoning and logical thinking.

The course will run on a typical American college model: reading assignments and lively discussion in class. Voluntary presentations will be welcomed. It is designed to facilitate the participants’ understanding of the Western intellectual heritage, while at the same time whetting their logical & critical reasoning.

Sociological research concepts are utilized in a variety of fields from education to urban planning, but few people understand the concepts that form the basis of good research.

This introductory course aims to familiarize students with the basics of social research from its foundations in philosophy and history to practical considerations necessary for designing and carrying out a social research project. The course also aims to help students think critically about their own work and the work of other researchers, as well as to understand ethical considerations when undertaking a research project.

No prior knowledge of sociology or social research is necessary to take this class

愛は現実的で絶対不可欠で人を夢中にさせますが、その一方で第三者から見れば錯覚さらには滑稽にも見え ます。最終的に定義できない経験のようでありながらも、数多くの詩人、小説家、または芸術家はこの現実を描 写あるいは表現する果てしない挑戦に魅了されてきました。本コースでは愛というテーマを軸に日本文学を比較 文学の観点から考察します。

Course overview:

In this course we will read and discuss Japanese literature from a comparative perspective. The unifying theme of this course will be love—a topic that is richly represented in the Japanese literary tradition. Key questions we will ask in class discussion will include: Is love a kind of madness? Is it a form of blindness? Why does love paradoxically feel so real and vital, yet at the same time illusory and even ridiculous? What exactly is love? Is such a question ultimately beyond us? What is it about love that seduces us, and yet finally defeats our best efforts?

The pedagogical approach taken in this course is a mix of classroom discussion and lecture. Reading materials will include a variety of literary and philosophical texts drawn from a diversity of historical periods and cultural traditions, giving this course a strong comparative dimension. Representative texts include Plato’s Symposium, “Love’s Bond” by Robert Nozick, Japanese Waka poetry (Shinkokinshû), Shakespeare’s Sonnets, Saikaku’s Five Women Who Loved Love, and others.

Most texts will be made available as pdf copies.
