Features

  1. Various classes, from beginner to highly-advanced, are offered. They include, but are not exhausted by, Daily Conversation, Business Conversation, News in Japanese, and Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Prep.
  2. The student will choose a class that suits their level of Japanese proficiency, time frame and study objective.
  3. The Intermediate and Advanced level conversation classes will each complete a textbook over several terms. In accordance with their progress, the student is encouraged to stay on in the same class till completion.

This class is designed to develop the learners’ practical Japanese conversational fluency, with a special emphasis on business-related situations. It offers comprehensive training for spontaneous conversational skills. The teaching material is Nichibei Kaiwagakuin’s newly published original textbook NIHONGO EXPRESS Basic 1 (Ask Publishing). It is user-friendly to those who are not familiar with hiragana or are pressed for time, since its conversation skits are presented in Japanese, English, and Latin alphabet, while its questions and grammatical explanations are in English. It comes with a handy CD-ROM (a set of seven audio CDs) as a supplement for home study.

In this class, students will develop their Japanese conversation skills through comprehensive training which emphasizes fast comprehension and instantaneous response using practical Japanese for business situations. Students will use Nichibei Kaiwa Gakuin’s new original textbook, NIHONGO EXPRESS Basic 2 (Ask Publishing). During class, students will go over natural business conversation in role-play activities while learning basic Japanese grammar through audio materials and oral practice. The textbook comes with a CD-ROM as a supplement for home study, so even busy people can study easily on-the-go.

Practical Japanese Conversation (Basic)

We learn practical Japanese skills useful for real life situations. Alongside studying basic grammar, we listen to and speak phrases and expressions commensurate with the students’ level of proficiency. Intermediate Business Conversation A

In this class, students will develop their conversation skills and improve their smoothness and speed of communication, both of which are necessary in business situations. Students will use Nichibei Kaiwa Gakuin’s original textbook: Hito o Ugokasu! Jissen Bijinesu Nihongokaiwa Intermediate 1, (3A Corporation). The textbook’s practice dialogs include numerous grammar patterns and business vocabulary suitable for the JLPT N2 exam, and students will be able to acquire this grammar and vocabulary through repeated oral practice. In addition, furigana is written above all kanji characters, so even those who have difficulties with kanji can study business Japanese without any hassle. To supplement class work, there is also a mobile application for iOS and Android that supports self-study. We will complete one textbook in 3 terms (9 months).

Advanced Business Conversation

In this course, we learn expressions and skills to facilitate the business flow in situations that call for practical communication acumen, such as negotiation, addressing grievances, troubleshooting, interviewing, discussion and presentation. The course is designed for the purpose of mastering conversational skills requisite for the Japanese business community. It aims at a more natural and persuasive conversational style. To this end, the instructor will offer personalized coaching on pronunciation and intonation. Depending on the student’s needs, they may take the course on an ongoing basis.

Highly-Advanced Business Conversation:Negotiation and Meeting

In this class we learn to read pertinent material under a time constraint, analyze the data and present our views appropriate for the business context. The course is designed to hone the students’ Japanese proficiency through such training so they may accurately grasp the interlocutors’ intents in meetings and negotiations and also state their thoughts in an exact and persuasive fashion. The class will take a seminar format in which the students are prompted to take initiative. Presentations and the Q&A by the students are followed by detailed instructions and guidance from the teacher. At critical points the teacher will make use of her own textbook “Hito o Ugokasu! Jissen Bijinesu Nihongokaiwa” as a reference book. The course will be available on a continuous basis in line with the students’ ongoing needs.

  1. On pre-selected news topics, the instructor will explain the basic vocabulary while the students express their opinions.

Japanese Language Proficiency Test (N1, N2, N3)

This class prepares the students for the semi-annual Japanese Language Proficiency Test, aligning the schedule with the test dates, with The Power Buildup Course and The Last Spurt Course each designed to prepare the students appropriately in a three-month setup. These courses offer effective studies on the strength of close monitoring and analysis of past tests, preparing the students through exercises and expository comments.

[The Power Buildup Course]

In this course, the student learns the test trends and builds up basic skills in each test subject in preparation for the test six months ahead.

  • Vocabulary: Learning with a stress on basic knowledge of the reading and orthography of kanji, word formation and usage.
  • Grammar: Learning the basics of grammar so as to ace questions in sentence composition, sentential grammar, etc.
  • Reading: Leveraging the mastered basics of grammar to tackle exercises in solving questions.
  • Listening: Having a test-specific listening exercise by taking a mock test.

[The Last Spurt Course]

In this course, the student develops practical, test-specific skills in the process of solving mock test questions and getting used to the testing format.

  • Vocabulary:Boosting one’s vocabulary, linking it to improvement in reading and listening scores.
  • Grammar:Leveraging the mastered basics of grammar to tackle exercises in solving questions.
  • Reading: Acquiring the technique for answering heavily weighted reading questions within the time limit.
  • Listening: Developing test-specific skills by challenging various mock tests.
  • Mock test:Having a test-specific exercise by taking a mock test immediately before the real test.

Methodology

  • Vocabulary and Grammar: Explaining and explicating the grammatical points and vocabulary assigned as homework.(Sometimes the exercise sections are assigned as homework.)
  • Reading: Handing out reading materials and getting the students to answer the questions within a time limit, so as to teach them how to choose correct answers as well as how to effectively allocate time. (Occasionally, the instructor will assign some homework for the students to work on within a certain time limit, so she/he may go over the questions in the following class session and offer explanatory comments.)
  • Listening: Having the students answer listening questions, while at the same time explaining question formats and features.。

*Studying at home will be an integral part of the course, as the instructor checks the students’ answers and provides expository comments in class.

N4 Kanji Training

This class has been specially designed to prepare students for the kanji section of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N4, which is proctored twice a year in July and December. We will visually explain the composition of kanji characters in a way that is easy for everyone to understand. Moreover, students will build a strong foundation in kanji through repeated drills that focus on the characters that are likely to come up on the exam.
For students who struggle with kanji, or for students who are not sure how to study kanji effectively, we recommend this class to you.

Contents

  1. We will explain the composition of the fundamental kanji characters through pictures and stories. In this way, students will become able to imagine what the characters mean just by looking at them.
