The Regular Program: Class Contents

Features

  1. Stress on the mastery of the conversational skills of speaking and listening
  2. Emphasis on authentic Japanese pronunciation and intonation
  3. Practical exercises in role-playing, speech-making, mock interview, presentation, etc.
  4. Progressive learning, from hiragana and katakana to the kanji of JLPT N1 level
  5. Introduction of Japanese culture, customs and business manners alongside the proficiency level
  6. Teaching materials customized to the student’s objective and level, using textbooks authored by the JLI and the instructors
  7. 14 students maximum per class

Levels and Details

  • * Class contents and teaching materials are subject to change.

Basic Level

  • Basic level focuses on elementary communication skills necessary for work and day-to-day life.
  • By the completion of Basic 3, the student will have learned conversational skills required for ordinary job performance and daily activity.
  • The classes will make effective use of textbooks written in both Japanese and English, as well as picture cards designed to facilitate comprehension.

Intermediate Level

  • Intermediate level develops the communication ability needed for handling various situations at work and in daily life.
  • The student will learn the proper use of keigo so they may speak appropriate Japanese to their superiors and clients, depending on the person’s status (attitudinal expressions).
  • In the classes the student will read business e-mail and correspondence, and write compositions.

Advanced Level

  • Advanced level hones the communication ability to fluently interact with native Japanese speakers in all contexts both in the office and in day-to-day life.
  • The student will master the proficiency to effectively handle grievances, make presentations and conduct business negotiations through role-playing and mock meetings.

Basic 1

Goals

  • Basic 1 focuses on elementary communication skills necessary for work and day-to-day life, such as making a simple self-introduction, shopping, and placing an order at a restaurant.

Study Contents

  • The student will develop the basics of listening and speaking proficiency through repeated verbal exercise.
  • Through conversation practice and simple speech-making, the student will learn basic sentence patterns and expressions.
  • The student will learn hiragana, katakana and basic kanji.

Basic 2

Goals

  • Basic 2 focuses on simple communication skills, such as signing up with a gym, asking questions at a training seminar, talking with a friend on the phone, making a sales report, etc.

Study Contents

  • The student will have repeated conversation drills for various hypothetical situations so as to acquire the proficiency to smoothly carry on a conversation.
  • The teacher will be on hand to work with the student to improve their pronunciation.
  • The student will practice reading, writing and orally presenting sentences sprinkled with some kanji.

Basic 3

Goals

  • Basic 3 focuses on communication skills necessary for work and day-to-day life, such as making a business report, expressing a gratitude and apology, making a trip and moving, as well as the ability to read and write simple sentences.

Study Contents

  • The student will learn various sentence patterns and expressions necessary for work and day-to-day life through conversation practice and speech-making.
  • The teacher will be on hand to correct the student’s composition in detail.

JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test):

BJT (Business Japanese Proficiency Test):
There are 6 levels, from J1+ to J5.

Intermediate 1

Goals

  • Intermediate 1 develops conversation skills using simple keigo in some business and social situations inside and outside the office.

Study Contents

  • The student will learn basic attitudinal expressions through conversation drills, such as interviewing and role-playing.

Intermediate 2

Goals

  • Intermediate 2 develops conversation skills using keigo in business and social situations inside and outside the office.

Study Contents

  • The student will have practical exercise, such as a mock business phone conversation and a simple presentation.

Intermediate 3

Goals

  • Intermediate 3 develops communication skills to effectively use keigo, chiming, preliminaries and euphemisms in various business and social situations inside and outside the office.

Study Contents

  • The student will learn further practical attitudinal expressions effective in various hypothetical situations, such as requesting, declining, inquiring, visiting job interviewing, etc.

  • The student will learn an effective and pleasant conversational technique in such situations as handing over duties in the workplace, collecting information, making an appointment on the phone, etc.

Advanced 2

Goals

  • Advanced 2 hones communication skills to naturally and persuasively interact with native Japanese speakers using proper attitudinal expressions in all contexts both inside and outside the office.

Study Contents

  • The student will learn a persuasive and influencing conversational technique in situations that call for troubleshooting, negotiation, argumentation, etc.
