Daisuke has some friends coming over to his house and he wants to know the best phrases for making them feel welcome.

Kevin:
Hello and welcome again to Nichibei Kaiwa Gakuin Podcasting. A great place to review English words and phrases. This week I spoke with Nichibei student Daisuke about polite greetings. Hi Daisuke, how are you doing?
Daisuke:
I’m great Kevin, but I have a question. I’m hoping you can help me with.
Kevin:
Sure,what is it?
Daisuke:
I invited some British friends to my house for dinner over the Golden Week holidays.
Kevin:
How nice. So, what’s your question?
Daisuke:
I’d like to know some phrases to use when people arrive at your house, you know, to make them feel comfortable.
Kevin:
That’s an excellent question Daisuke. There are some standard phrases you can use when a guest visits your house. I’m going to find some Nichibei instructors right now and ask them for their opinions.
Daisuke:
Thanks Kevin, that would be great.
Kevin:
First I caught up with Nichibei teacher Joji Otani. Hello Joji. How are you today?
Joji Otani:
I’m fine. Is this another podcast question?
Kevin:
Yes it is. Do you have time?
Joji Otani:
All the time in the world. What’s the question?
Kevin:
Daisuke wants to know some polite expressions for greeting guests who arrive at his house.
Joji Otani:
OK. Am I the first person you’ve asked?
Kevin:
Yes, you are.
Joji Otani:
Well then. In my opinion, when you first greet a guest at home, a great phrase is, “Nice to see you! Thanks for coming!”
Kevin:
That has a very friendly feeling.
Joji Otani:
Doesn’t it? But, be sure to say it with a big smile on your face.
Kevin:
Let’s give it a try.
Joji Otani:
OK.
Kevin:
Ding dong.
Joji Otani:
Oh hi Kevin! Nice to see you. Thanks for coming.
Kevin:
Hi Joji. How are you.
Joji Otani:
I’m fine come in come in.
Kevin:
OK,thanks Joji Otani. That sounded great.
Joji Otani:
I’m happy I could help.
Kevin:
Next I asked Nichibei instructor Scott Seeley. Scott, do you have a moment?
Scott Seeley:
Sure, what’s up?
Kevin:
A Student wants to know how to welcome guest to his house. We’ve already talked about a greeting at the door. What would you suggest next?
Scott Seeley:
Next, I’d suggest you say something to make your guest feel comfortable. For this I’d suggest the phrase “Make yourself at home” which means you want your guest to feel as if they are in their own home.
Kevin:
Could you put that into a sentence?
Scott Seeley:
Sure, I could say….”Please, make yourself at home, have a seat.”
Kevin:
Thanks Scott. That’s very useful.
Scott Seeley:
You’re welcome Kevin.
Kevin:
Finally, I caught up with Nichibei instructor, Lorraine Yao.
Hello Lorraine. Do you have a minute?
Lorraine Yao:
Sure, what’s up?
Kevin:
This is for Daisuke. He wants to know how to make guests at his home feel comfortable. We already have phrases for greeting and asking them to make themselves at home. Is there anything else you can suggest.
Lorraine Yao:
Sure. I’d like to add the phrase “Can I get you something to drink?” or you can even offer something by saying “Can I get you something to drink, a beer or a soft drink?”
Kevin:
Excellent Lorraine. Good suggestion. I’m sure that will help Daisuke. Thanks.
Lorraine Yao:
You’re welcome Kevin. Have a good day.
Kevin:
OK Daisuke. Did you listen to the phrases the teachers suggested?
Daisuke:
Yes I did.
Kevin:
So, are you ready to give it a try?
Daisuke:
I sure am! Let’s go!
Kevin:
Ding dong.
Daisuke:
Oh hi Kevin! Nice to see you. Thanks for coming.
Kevin:
Hi Daisuke. How are you.
Daisuke:
I’m fine come in come in.
Kevin:
Oh! nice house!
Daisuke: Please, Make yourself at home, have a seat.
Kevin:
Thank you.
Daisuke:
Can I get you something to drink, a beer or a soft drink?
Kevin:
Ah…A beer would be fine…… Good Daisuke. That sounded great. Good job.
Daisuke:
Thanks Kevin. I appreciate it.
Kevin:
