What kind of conversation should you expect if you are stopped for speeding by the police. Nichibei student Satoshi explores this question with Kevin.

Kevin:
Hello everyone and welcome to Nichibei Kaiwa Gakuin Podcasting. A great way to review English words and phrases. Hi this is Kevin Jones.
This episode I am talking with Nichibei student, Satoshi. Tell us about your question.
Satoshi:
Sure. Next month I’ll going on my dream trip to America.
Kevin:
What do you mean “dream trip”?
Satoshi:
Well,I love driving. So, I’m flying to New York, renting a sports car and driving to Los Angeles. This is something I’ve always wanted to do.
Kevin:
That sounds like fun. So what’s your question?
Satoshi:
Well, to be honest, I like to drive fast, so there is a chance I will get a speeding ticket. So my question is… what’s it like to get a speeding ticket? What kind of English vocabulary should I be ready for?
Kevin:
OK. I have a recording of this kind of situation. I’ll play it for you.
Police Officer:
Pull Over, Pull Over.
Driver:
Oh no!
Police Officer:
License and registration.
Driver:
Excuse me?
Police Officer:
Please give me your drivers license and car registration.
Driver:
Here’s my driver’s license. I don’t have the registration. The car is a rental.
Police Officer:
That’s fine. Just let me see the rental agreement.
Driver:
Here you are.
Police Officer:
Do you know how fast you were going?
Driver:
No, I’m sorry I don’t
Police Officer:
Radar clocked you at 85. That’s 30 miles per hour over the speed limit.
Driver:
I see.
Police Officer:
I’m going to have to give you a citation for speeding. And, here’s your ticket. Instructions for sending payment are on the back.
Driver:
How long do I have to send the payment.
Police Officer:
Ninety days.
Driver:
Thank you.
Police Officer:
OK. That’s it. Drive safely and keep your speed down.
Driver:
I will.
Kevin:
Now let’s listen again.
Police Officer:
Pull over. Pull over.
Driver:
Oh no.
Police Officer:
License and registration.
Kevin:
OK. Any questions so far?
Satoshi:
The police said “pull over”
Kevin:
Right. Pull over means to drive to the side of the road and stop.
Satoshi:
OK. Pull over.
Kevin:
Let’s continue.
Driver:
Excuse me?
Police Officer:
Please give me your drivers license and car registration.
Driver:
Here’s my driver’s license. I don’t have the registration, This car is a rental.
Police Officer:
That’s fine. Just let me see the rental agreement.
Satoshi:
Rental means it’s a rent-a-car, right?
Kevin:
That’s right
Satoshi:
What’s the rental agreement?
Kevin:
The rental agreement means the contract. The paper you signed when you rented the car.
Satoshi:
OK
Kevin:
Let’s continue.
Driver:
Here you are.
Police Officer:
Do you know how fast you were going?

Satoshi:
I see. And how about posted?
Kevin:
Posted simply means shown or displayed. Ok, let’s continue.
Driver:
I see.
Police Officer:
I’m going to have to give you a citation for speeding.
Satoshi:
Ah, citation?
Kevin:
Right, a traffic citation is just another way to say traffic ticket.
Satoshi:
All right.
Police Officer:
And, here’s your ticket. Kevin:
OK. Let’s do it one more time and you speak the part of the driver.
Satoshi:
