Kevin:
Hello and welcome to Nichibei Kaiwa Gakuin Podcasting episode 76. A great place to review English words and phrases. My name is Kevin Jones. In this business edition of the podcast we will look at some casual ways to say goodbye at the end of the workday. Let’s listen to our first conversation.
Staff A:
Bye, Rika, I’m off.
Staff B:
Bye, Gloria. Have a good evening. See you tomorrow.
Kevin:
Here our key phrase is I’m off. This is a casual way to say I’m leaving now. Now you give it a try. Say, Bye Rika, I’m off.
*******
Kevin:
Bye, Gloria. Have a good evening. See you tomorrow.
Rika answers with… “Have a good evening”. “See you tomorrow”.
Rika uses friendly intonation. This conversation is a quick and friendly way to say goodbye.
Let’s now try another conversation. Listen to this.
Staff A:
Well Rika, it’s a quarter to six. Time to call it a day.
Would you like me to stick around ?
Staff B:
No no, I’m fine. I’m going to stay and finish up this presentation.
Staff A:
Well, OK. Bye then. I’ll See you on Monday.
Staff B:
Thanks Gloria, Bye. Have a good weekend.
Kevin:
Did you notice the casual phrase Gloria used. “Time to call it a day” ? This phrase means that it is late and we can now say that the day is finished. Time to call it a day
or
if you want to say, “let’s stop working for today”, you can say
Let’s call it a day.
Let’s call it a day.
Now you try. Repeat that.
Let’s call it a day.
*******

Next, Gloria asks Rika…

Staff A:
Would you like me to stick around ?
Kevin:
Can you understand this phrase stick around? It’s pretty easy. It means to remain or stay in a place.
Repeat that phrase with me again.
Would you like me to stick around.
*******
You can ask some to stick around. just say…
Could you stick around?
Repeat that phrase with me again.
Could you stick around?
*******
Try to use some of these simple casual phrases when you are leaving the office for the night. Well I would like to stick around but that’s all the time we have for this podcast so I’d better call it a day.
