037_Heartfelt_Goodbyes

Emi will soon be leaving Japan and she needs to know how to make a more heartfelt goodbye to her friends and coworkers. Nichibei instructor Conan Sharp helps her out with some of his ideas.

Kevin:
Hello everyone and welcome to Nichibei Kaiwa Gakuin Podcasting. A great way to review English words and phrases. My name is Kevin Jones. And once again with us today is Nichibei student Emi.
Emi:
Hello Kevin.
Kevin:
And also with us today is Nichibei instructor, Conan Sharp. Hi Conan. How are you today?
Conan Sharp:
Very well Kevin.
Kevin:
Emi, thanks for joining us again.
Emi:
My pleasure Kevin.
Kevin:
Conan Sharp, You remember this is Emi's last week at Nichibei.
Conan Sharp:
Oh that's right. How long have you been here Emi?
Emi:
I've been working and studying here for four years.
Conan Sharp:
Where're you going Emi?
Emi:
I got a job in Los Angeles.
Conan Sharp:
L.A. ! what kind of job?
Emi:
I'll be working in an American film distributor in their Los Angeles headquarters.
Conan Sharp:
Wow, that sounds like an interesting job.
Emi:
Yeah it should be, but I'm a little nervous. I don't know much about the film industry.
Kevin:
So your last day at work is this Friday?
Emi:
Yeah, that's right. So that brings me to my question. I know how to say good bye in everyday situations. You know, like phrases like "good bye, see you later"...
Conan Sharp:
uh huh.
Emi:
But this time is different.
Conan Sharp:
you mean you're leaving for good.
Emi:
Right. I may not see some of these people again. or at least for a long time.
so I'm hoping you can tell me some phrases which are more heartful.
Conan Sharp:
You mean Heartfelt.?
Emi:
Heartfelt?
Conan Sharp:
Yes. you just used the word Heartful. I like the word heartful, it's pretty cute Japanese English, but we can't find it in any English dictionaries.
Anyway Emi, You're looking for some more heartfelt expressions to use when you are saying goodbye to friends and acquaintances.
Emi:
Yes, exactly. More heartfelt expressions.
Kevin:
Conan, what can you suggest for Emi.
Conan Sharp:
These kind of goodbye situations are the same in any language.
First, you want to make a pre-closing statement.
You should probably say thank you for any special considerations or kindness the person has shown you.
Emi:
For example?
Conan Sharp:
If you are saying goodbye to a teacher, you might say,
'Thanks you so much for all your excellent instruction'.
Emi:
Thank you so much for all your excellent instruction.
Conan Sharp:
If you were saying goodbye to a co-worker, you could say ' Bob, 'I've really enjoyed working with you.'
Emi:
I've really enjoyed working with you.
Conan Sharp:
If you were saying goodbye to your boss, you could say ' I appreciate all the things you've taught me about office management.'
Emi:
I appreciate all the things you've taught me.
Conan Sharp:
Now after you've expressed you thanks, You can express some hope for the future.
Emi:
I don't follow.
Conan Sharp:
Oh. This is just some expression which states that you hope that your relationship will continue.
Something like.....'Let's stay in touch'
Emi:
Let's stay in touch.
Conan Sharp:
Or....'Drop me a line sometimes'.
Emi:
'Drop me a line' means send me a letter or message?
Conan Sharp:
Yeah, that's right.... Now, you could express an invitation them. such as 'Please look me up when you're in Los Angeles.' or 'Let's get together next time you're in L.A'. Then to finish you can use a terminal pair or ending expression such as,
'Take care, see you'.
or
'See you, goodbye'.
or
'Thanks again, good-bye'.
or any variation like that.
Emi:
That seems clear.
Conan Sharp:
Good then why don't you give it a try. I'll play your long time co-worker who you have to say goodbye to.
Emi:
OK......Conan?
Conan Sharp:
Oh yeah, Hi Emi.
Emi:
I just want to say I've really enjoyed working with you these past four years.
Conan Sharp:
Same here Emi. It's been great working with you.
Emi:
Let's stay in touch and if you're ever in L.A., please look me up.
Conan Sharp:
I certainly will Emi, Thanks for everything and good luck in L.A.
Emi:
Thanks Conan Sharp. See you. Goodbye!
Conan Sharp:
That was perfect Emi. That sounded very heartfelt.
Emi:
Thanks for your help.
Kevin:
It's been great working with you Emi. Best of luck to you in L.A. Emi.
Conan Sharp:
Yeah, same here. We're going to miss you around here.
Emi:
Stop it! you're going to make me cry.
Kevin:
Kevin:
