058_Clearing_Security

Satomi has another question for Glenn. This time her question is about the words and language of clearing security.

Kevin:
Hello everyone and welcome to Nichibei Kaiwa Gakuin Podcasting. A great way to review English words and phrases. Hi this is Kevin Jones.
In the last episode, Satomi had a question about travel English. She wanted to know what kind of language she will hear when she arrives at United States Customs and Border Protection. This episode she has one more question about departure security when she leaves the United States. Let's listen in as she continues to talk with Nichibei instructor Glenn Evanish.
Glenn Evanish:
You have another question.
Satomi:
Yeah I do. Could you tell me what kind of words and phrases I should be ready for when I go through security.
Glenn Evanish:
You mean when you leave the United States?
Satomi:
Right. Airport security when I'm returning to Japan.
Glenn Evanish:
OK. Well I just returned from the U.S. and the phrase I heard many times at security was this one.
Announcer:
Do you have any gels, aerosols or liquids?
Glenn Evanish:
Or this one.
Announcer:
Are you carrying any gels or liquids or aerosols in your carry-on baggage?
Glenn Evanish:
Or this one.
Announcer:
The TSA would like to remind you, Please remove any gels, liquids or aerosols from your carry-on luggage.
Satomi:
OK, Gels or what?
Glenn Evanish:
Liquids
Satomi:
Liquids, like water, perfume, contact lens cleaner?
Glenn Evanish:
That's right. these are banned from carry-on luggage on most international flights.
Satomi:
Banned?
Glenn Evanish:
Oh, banned means officially not allowed.
Satomi:
And what about aerosols, what does that mean?
Glenn Evanish:
Aerosols means a spray like hair spray.
Satomi:
All liquids are banned?
Glenn Evanish:
Well you can take liquids if it's in a small bottle. 3 ounces or less.
Satomi:
How much is three ounces?
Glenn Evanish:
Not much, about the size of a little hotel shampoo bottle.
Satomi:
I see.
Glenn Evanish:
And, you have to carry all your small bottles in a clear plastic zip top bag.
Satomi:
Wow, it sounds like a lot of trouble.
Glenn Evanish:
It is. I lost a new tube of toothpaste on my trip. I would suggest that you put all your liquids in your checked luggage.
Satomi:
Any other tips about going through security?
Glenn Evanish:
Yes, you may hear this announcement.
Announcer:
Everybody please remove your shoes and place them in a plastic bin on the conveyor.
Satomi:
People still have to take off their shoes?
Glenn Evanish:
Yes they still do. So I think you should wear shoes that are easy to take off...no boots!
Satomi:
Alright. Thanks for your tips.
Glenn Evanish:
My pleasure and have a good time in Las Vegas.
Satomi:
I'm sure I will.
